In this study, focusing on the drift story of Taewonji, the concrete shapes of monsters and monsters presented in it were examined. Through this, I tried to confirm the specific aspects of the fear evoked by the imagination of the existence outside the sea projected in the shapes of the various islands, each existence, and space on which Im Seong and his companions landed. Various monsters appear in the drifting stories of Taewonji. It is divided into three categories: the giant monsters, the animal monsters, the female monsters(Yogoinyeo, Gumihofox with nine tails). The giant monsters are immortal beings that have existed since the mythological era, and they show divine powers in a space where there are no humans and no traces, but it is meant as de-sanctified magic. In addition, the animal monsters approach Lim-seong and others while concealing their identities, causing them to disappear or blind them. The female monsters are beings who attract and imprison Lim-seong and the others with their beauty, and their dwellings are set in deep caves or overly splendid places surrounded by layers of veils. The three types of monsters are acting as a metaphor for anxiety and isolation resulting from the uncertainty of the subject who has lost his country and drifted into the vast sea. And Im Seong and his companions’s extermination of the monster is an act of overcoming the fear and anxiety.
