Even though wine is an important subject in literature around the world, comparative studies on it are very rare. Given its universality, a comparative study of the symbolism of wine is expected to shed light on the characteristics of each regional literature. We, authors, study the symbolism of wine in the Eastern and the Western literature with a focus on the drinking poetry of Li Bai and the history play Henry IV of William Shakespeare. We start with surveying the tradition and background of wine literature in China and the Western Europe to contextualize Li Bai’s and Shakespeare’s works. We note that, in China, the so-called drinking poetry where drinking itself is the poetic subject is a long tradition and poems are mostly expressions of the poet’s emotions. In contrast, Greek mythologies and Christianity played an important role in the European literature of wine, from which the notions of a liberating drinker and Fortunate Fall originate respectively and poems are imitative reconfigurations of those notions in the West. Then, analyzing Li Bai’s representative drinking poems and Shakespeare’s Henry IV, we note that, in the phase of conflict between individuals and society, the former tend to allow individual freedom at a distance from society while the latter tends to remind of communal goodness in the last resort. We conclude that, derivative of the expressive and the mimetic tradition of wine poetry in China and Western Europe, the Eastern literature is object-oriented while the Western is telos-oriented.
