The purpose of this essay is to analyze how Alison Bechdel, the author of 2006 graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, rewrites her father?s life and embraces the queer possibilities in Fun Home. Fun Home is a memoir of Bechdel?s coming of age, mainly focused on Bechdel?s relationship with her father, Bruce Bechdel, who died when Alison just started her new life as a young queer artist. Alison suspects that her father?s self-loathing and feeling of shame for being a homosexual might have driven him to suicide. She compares her open queerness with the closeted homosexuality of her father, drawing a definite distinction between Alison and Bruce, and claims that her father was a victim of homophobia. However, by rewriting Bruce?s life and the relationship between Alison and her father through Fun Home?s cyclical and non-linear narrative structure that provides multiple and revised perspectives on events, Bechdel adds another dimension to her father, and shows the complex and indefinite, ‘queer’ possibility of his life. Furthermore, this rereading and rewriting challenge the notion of the dominant culture which seeks unambiguous and definite ways to define a subject and identity.
