The objective of this article is to address what Wesley’s perspective of happiness is and its meaning within his era, the Enlightenment, where the linkage of happiness with sensual pleasures accompanying an instant satisfaction was prevailed. In this circumstance of his era, Wesley argues, “By happiness I mean, not a slight, trifling pleasure, that perhaps begins and ends in the same hour; but such a state of well-being as contents the soul, and gives it a steady, lasting satisfaction.”(Wesley, Sermon 149 “On Love” III.4., Works 4:386.) Then, he links happiness with holiness because he is convinced that true happiness as the ultimate goal of human life is in holiness. In this way, Wesley argues the justifiability of exploring the telos of human existence/ human life and explains what the transformed life of Christians is.
