As regards recent study on the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in the Korean Protestant churches, one locates a remarkable phenomenon: that is, the research tends to draw lessons for the Korean Protestant churches without paying legitimate attention to the gap of time and space between the 16th century European Reformation and contemporary Korean Christianity. Furthermore, there is few, if any, literature which shows interest in the last 100 year history of the Reformation in Korea. This article aims to investigate what the Korean Protestant churches came to understand the Reformation and how. Since that is an enormous task, this essay focuses on the early literature, especially books, on the Reformation which were published from the early years to the Liberation in Korea. This article investigates seven books published in the period under consideration, which show the following characteristics. First, concerning authors, the first four books were written by missionaries, the fifth one was a translation from English to Korean by a Korean expert, and the last two were written by a Korean scholar and a Korean minister. The initiative in authorship gradually moved from the expatriate to the national. Second, in terms of contents, four books deal with the history of the Reformation and post-Reformation, and three other books portrait three representative heroes of the Reformation, Luther, Knox and Calvin. Last, regarding the years of publication, one was published in the 1900s, two in the 1910s, two in the 1920s, one in the 1930s, and one in the 1940s, which reveals the constant interest of the pre-Liberation Korean Protestant churches in the Reformation. This essay has found that much of the information on the Reformation, including the Catholic church at the time, was given in the pre-Liberation years, although one is not sure whether the then Korean Protestant churches sufficiently appropriated the information and how; that the concept and terminology were cast and minted at the time, and yet those were not fully appreciated in the ensuing study; and, however, that the publication of the books itself showcases the development of the self-theologizing process in Korea.
