This study examines how western art music related concepts are pervasive in multicultural music education or so-called world music class. Music education has changed drastically especially in the way which music classes include various music cultures other than western art music and traditional Korean music. However, world music class has shown it has reinforced the hegemony of the western music. While increasing numbers of scholarly works on multicultural education point out that the multicultural education should seek for dewesternizing and decolonizing music class, world music class has focused on display or exhibit of surface level of non-western music. This study provides two perspectives and approaches to teach and learn world music class as a way to overcome its objectified others in non-western music cultures: 1) postnational perspectvie; 2) decanonizing through reconsidering the concepts of tradition and authenticity. Taking a look at scholarly works that criticizes and provides insightful analysis on world music class in various ways, this study argues that multicultural music education should pay attention what has been unconsciously and uncritically accepted western music hegemony.
