As a qualitative case study, the aim of this study is twofold. The first is to evaluate the current English for Medical Purposes (EMP) classroom teaching and learning designed for undergraduate students in a healthcare college. This study also explores the needs for future EMP programs by focusing on the perceptions of different stakeholders (students, instructors, and domain experts). A total of 30 students with different healthcare majors attended an online two-week intensive EMP course taught by six instructors (three native speakers from the UK and three Koreans). The students responded to the pre- and post-program questionnaires, while the instructors only participated in the post-program survey. In addition to the student and English instructor surveys, semi-structured interviews with two domain experts were conducted to elicit their views on EMP teaching and learning. Results from the qualitative analysis of surveys and interviews showed that the three stakeholder groups shared similar perspectives on the current and future EMP teaching and learning practices. These included the need for authentic, real-life educational contents and materials that address healthcare professionals’ needs and the preference for instructors with medical knowledge or working experience. At the same time, however, they respectively addressed slightly different needs for the educational contents, instructors, and teaching/learning environment in terms of the medium of instruction, online/blended mode of instruction, and course duration. This finding implies that stakeholder collaboration is critical in tailoring EMP programs for future healthcare professionals. The findings also provide implications for EMP curriculum development and implementation.
