The purpose of this study is to analyze the change in designer's competency required by start-up business and to suggest the direction of the competency that designers need to cultivate. The importance of design and development of start-up companies was examined by analyzing the history and development of domestic and foreign start-ups. As the company grew and the business environment changed, the strategic goal of the company required a change in the role of the designer. The designer's ability was confirmed as the competency of a strategic role through the stages of the startup process, Through the importance of design ability, it was confirmed as the competency of the entrepreneurial role. Finally, the competence of the decision maker was confirmed by participating in important corporate decisions. It was confirmed that the direction of the three competencies derived along with this is composed of the goal of competencies that create new values.
