Interpreter guides have various important aspects in the tourism industry. The market of Japanese interpreter guides has been monopolized by nationally qualified licensed interpreter-guides. However, due to the gradual law amendment, even no license holders can run an interpreter-guide business. This is expected to intensify competition in the interpreter-guide market. Also, development of information technology enables them to run business independently without the power relationship between travel agencies. Therefore, this paper discusses the importance of human resource development for interpreter-guides in Japan to act with advantages in the market. It describes the current situation and issues of Japanese interpreter-guides, and classifies the roles of them based on previous research. It was found that their roles are wide variety and complex. Their roles are different depending on the forms of a tour or demands of customers. Interpreter-guides strongly need to understand their roles and enhance their competence to interact with their customers to gain high customer satisfaction. This research is anticipated to contribute to the development of future interpreter-guides in Japan.
