Sensitive skin is a complex skin problem caused by genetic, personal, environmental, occupational, or racial factors. Compared to normal skin, the modulating or immune function is extremely low so that the skin over-responds to even little stimulation. To utilize Spirulina platensis, which is known to be effective in allergic reaction and anti-inflammatory activity/anti-oxidant activities in the manufacturing of cosmetics, this study attempted to analyze the improvement of skin conditions and search for an effective skin care plan for reddish and sensitive skin after manufacturing a cream containing Spirulina platensis extract and applying it to the face of the patients with reddish or sensitive skin. Using Spectrophotometer CM-2500d, ‘a’ (redness) and ‘b’ (yellowness) values which refer to L (lightness) and color coordinates index in the CIE Lab color system, respectively, were measured. Then, measurement by instruments, visual estimation, and self-assessment were performed around the cheeks amongst 22 females in their 20-40s with 15 or higher of ‘a’ value before and after the use of a cream containing Spirulina platensis extract. The results found as follows: In both the experimental group (cream containing spirulina extract group) and the control group, moisture and sebum levels increased two weeks after the use of the cream containing Spirulina platensis extract without statistical significance. ‘L’ value increased in both the experimental and control groups after the use of the product, revealing changes in skin tone. In addition, a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in ‘a’ value was found in the control group, confirming that the product is effective in improving red spots. In a questionnaire survey-based subjective evaluation as well, the experimental group revealed more positive results in red spot and sensitivity-easing effects. In fact, the results of the participants’subjective evaluation were greater than visual estimation conducted by an expert. Therefore, it can be concluded that cream containing Spirulina platensis extract is helpful in easing red spots and skin sensitivity.
