Given that 2020 is the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, a deal is needed to open the door to higher levels of cooperation and a post-Cold War road map to an era of peace on the Korean peninsula and the larger East Asian region. In today’s circumstances, the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, established out of a militarist and anti-communist response to the 1987 pro-democracy movement and the end of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1989, stands at the crossroads of change.
As a public venue for education on national history and towards a history of peace, the War Memorial should become a peace memorial for Korea and aim for pacifist narratives instead of promoting the Korean War and the history of wars fought over the ideologies of nationalism and anti-communism.
