Maurice Halbwachs, who first proposed the concept of ‘collective memory’, points out two characteristics of memory as a methodology. First, memory is a social rather than an individual process. In society, memory is acquired, and what to remember and what to forget are determined and arranged. Second, Memory is different from history. Whereas history pursues a formal, singular and universal meaning, memory is informal, irregular, plural and individual. Pierre Nora, who has further studied the collective memory of France, proposed this concept of ‘place of memory’, which is formed by the interaction between memory and history. It has meaning not as a ‘something’ that people remember, but as a ‘place’ where memory works. This article intends to graft the methodological meaning of the concept of 'a place of memory' onto the memory study of the current Chinese national anthem, 義勇軍進行曲. Specifically, it is necessary to understand how social memory is formed through the dissemination of mass media and the institutionalization of the national anthem. In this way, we should not only pay attention to the interaction between politics and memory, but also find out the ‘cracks’ in collective memory between China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
