Parental autonomy support ameliorates depression, but the potential underlying mechanisms of this relationship remain unknown. The current study aims to disentangle the pathways linking parental autonomy to depression through the serial mediation effect of grit and social withdrawal in early adolescence. Structural equation modeling analysis was used to examine the relationship. Serial and single mediation analyses using bootstrapping and phantom variables were conducted to examine whether grit and social withdrawal mediated the relationship between parental autonomy support and depression, jointly and independently. The fourth wave data from Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018(KCYPS 2018) of fourth graders were analyzed. The serial mediation analysis indicated that the relationship between parental autonomy support and depression was mediated by grit and social withdrawal sequentially. The single mediation analysis indicated that grit partially mediated the association between parental autonomy support and depression, but the mediation of social withdrawal was not significant. In addition, grit fully mediated the relationship between parental autonomy support and social withdrawal, and social withdrawal partially mediated the association between grit and depression. These results suggest that new programs should be developed to prevent or alleviate depression in early adolescence. Specifically, parental autonomy support, grit, and social withdrawal need to be emphasized in planning prevention or intervention programs to promote mental health of adolescents.
