Spirituality is a ambiguous concept, but it can be organized around the idea of interiority. In the West, the seeds of introspection began with Plato, and by the time of Augustine, it had taken on the form of “going inward to turn upward.” Augustine"s inwardness has had a profound impact on the history of Western spirituality since then, but it has tended to take on secularized forms as it has given way to Cartesian inwardness. Charles Taylor points to the important role that literary works and criticism plays in the formation of this modern inwardness. What he calls the “expressivist turn” is an important example of this outcome.
Our situation may be quite different from that of the West, but ultimately similar. We have embraced both Augustinian and Cartesian inwardness at the outset. The novel Moojung, which is considered to be the first ‘modern’ Korean novel, contributed to the broad acceptance of modern inwardness by embracing the “expressivist turn,” but it was a work that started with Augustinian possibilities and moved toward a Cartesian conclusion. Je-saeng, written by the same author seven years later, was more Augustinian than Cartesian, but unlike Moojung, it did not gain critical approval. It can be said to be a symbolic scene of the split between modern inwardness and spirituality in the early modern period in Korea.
