As the micro processing innovation of semiconductor (IC) is more and more needed than before, a high level of chip packaging & testing (OSAT) capability became essential for every foundry firm. The foundry became rarely able to make the Nano technology innovation without accompanying a good OSAT partner. This study managed the competitiveness of ASE Technology of Taiwan, the global No. 1 OSAT, through the general knowledge and specific knowledge on the value chain of system chip industry. The general knowledge is almost free to transfer between entities. But as the information transfer cost increases, the information is to be more and more specific. Four approaches of this study were made to analyze the competitiveness of ASE Technology. They include the business structure, labor productivity of ASE Technology as well as management result comparison between three leading firms of Taiwan, ASE Technology, MediaTek & TSMC.
Also, Taiwan’s IC industry growth condition was reviewed in order to clarify the spectrum of general knowledge and specific knowledge on the value chain. In result, the ASE Technology succeeded in creating a unique position in the system chip industry cluster of Taiwan by accumulating a specific knowledge rather than a general one.
