The purpose of this mixed methods study is to examine the effects of independent living program for adolescents in out-of-home care. For quantitative analysis, the data obtained from 60 adolescents who were surveyed before and after the participation of the program were analyzed employing paired t-tests. For qualitative analysis, we analyzed data obtained from individual in-depth interviews with 7 adolescents and focus group interviews (FGIs) with 8 personal advisors (PAs). The major findings of quantitative analysis showed that participants had achieved higher scores in all areas of independent living skills in the posttest assessment compared to those in the pretest, and these changes were statistically significant. In addition, anxiety scores were lowered at a statistically significant level in the posttest. Confidence level was somewhat lowered in the posttest, but no statistical significance was found. The results of qualitative analysis revealed that participants had learned a variety of essential independent living skills while living in a separate space at least for a month. Participants also gained more confidence through carefully thinking about their independence and career path and emotional stability through 1:1 close support and advice from their PAs. Based on the findings, the study suggests several implications for policy and practice to further develop independent living programs for adolescents in out-of-home care.
