The purpose of this paper is to analyze the valence relation and semantic expansion patterns of the Modern Chinese ‘da(打)+NP’ construction by using the theory of autonomy-dependence relation in cognitive grammar and the metaphoric and metonymic processes in cognitive semantics. The focus is on examining the polysemy of the verb ‘da (打)’. This study shows the meaning of the verb ‘da(打)’ is manifested within the construction and in the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction. The verb ‘da(打)’ exhibits a dependence structure, the noun object exhibits autonomy structure. The meaning of the verb ‘da(打)’ becomes elaborated and extended based on the type of noun object it combines with. Summarizing the research results:
First, based on the 20 meaning items of the verb ‘da(打)’ in Modern Chinese dictionary, the prototype and extended construction of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction are classified. As a result, they are categorized into 8 types: prototype construction [HIT]; extended construction [DAMAGE], [ATTACK], [PRODUCE], [CHANGE], [MOVE], [ACQUIRE], [REMOVE].
Second, the valence relation of prototype and construction ‘da1(打1)+NP’ are analyzed by using Langacker’s theory of autonomy-dependence relation. The results show that the verb ‘da(打)’ itself cannot activate meaning independently but gain elaboration based on the noun object it combines with.
Third, based on the results of the valence relation in the prototype construction, the semantic expansion patterns of the extended construction ‘dax(打x)+NP’ are analyzed. The results show that the meaning of the prototype construction is elaborated and expanded through metaphor and metonymy.
Fourth, building upon the analysis of the semantic expansion patterns of the ‘da (打)+NP’ construction, a network of semantic expansion is established, and the polysemous aspect of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction is diagrammed. The results confirm that the polysemous aspect of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction can be categorized into ‘horizontal polysemy’ and ‘vertical polysemy’.
From a cognitive linguistic perspective, this study has elucidated the mechanism behind the polysemy of the verb ‘da(打)’ through the analysis of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction. This analysis further enhances our understanding of polysemous verbs, which are abundant in Modern Chinese, and demonstrates the effectiveness of cognitive linguistic theories as tools for polysemy research.
