The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning extension patterns of the verb ‘da(打)’ in Modern Chinese through the meaning extension network of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction, assuming that the polysemy of the verb ‘da(打)’ is activated in the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction from a cognitive perspective.
Through discussions on useful analytical frameworks for studying the polysemy of the verb ‘da(打)’, it was confirmed that elucidating polysemy phenomena from a cognitive perspective and examining meaning extension patterns through Langacker’s ‘network model’ are appropriate.
This study summarizes the characteristics of each semantic category within the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction to construct the meaning extension network of the ‘da(打)+NP’ construction. Based on this, it scrutinizes the meaning extension patterns of the verb ‘da(打)’ in detail. The research findings confirm that the verb ‘da(打)’ expands from its prototypical meaning [+hit] to the extended meaning [+move], all within the category of [+contact], structured organically. Thus, by categorizing the verb ‘da(打)’ as a contact verb, it becomes possible to understand the extensive polysemy of the verb ‘da(打)’.
This study aims to support the validity of a cognitive linguistic approach in polysemy research and to contribute to a deeper understanding of the polysemy of the verb ‘da(打)’ by presenting a new meaning extension network, ultimately aiding in the study of polysemy in Modern Chinese.
