This paper quantitatively compared and analyzed the decline and development of space-category adpositions by period from a diachronic perspective based on corpus. The results of the study are as follows.
Until the Tang and Five Dynasties (唐五代) period, the commonly used Chinese adpositions in the spatial sense were limited to ‘yú (於), zài (在), zì (自), cóng (從)’. However, a wider variety of adpositions in common use began to appear from the Tang and Five Dynasties period. This was because ‘bái hua (白話)’ had appeared during this period, such as dùnhuáng biànwén (燉煌變文), and played a vital role in the development of Chinese linguistics as a boundary between Ancient and Early Modern Chinese. ‘Yú (於)’, a representative space-category adposition in common use in the period of Ancient Chinese, also occupied an absolute predominance; however, as it began to decline through the Tang and Five Dynasties period, various space-category adpositions took its place. In addition to the commonly used adpositions ‘yú (於), cóng (從), zài (在), zì (自)’, new adpositions ‘xiàng (嚮), wǎng (往)’ appeared during the Middle Chinese period and the usage of ‘dào (到)’ gradually began to increase, while adposition ‘zì (自)’ decreased sharply. During the Early Modern Chinese period, the proportion of the use of adposition ‘zài (在)’ increased sharply, taking up an overwhelmingly high portion. Accordingly, ‘dào (到)’, which was an emerging adposition in the Middle Chinese period, significantly emerged as a commonly used adposition, developing into a pattern of various space-category adpositions in modern times.
