This study aims to analyze the acquisition of the order of the parallel structure in compound nouns related to foods and food ingredients in English by Korean university English learners. For this study, a survey was conducted with 210 students from three faculties: humanities & social studies; art, music, & physical education; and science & engineering. First, the study sought to identify differences in students’ learning of the parallel-structure word order of compound nouns concerning foods and ingredients names based on their majors. Second, it also examined whether semantic or phonetic factors had a stronger influence on the word order decisions of the survey participants regarding the compound nouns. The findings indicated no significant difference between students based on their majors. It was also observed that across the three faculties, students’ acquisition of compound nouns was more strongly influenced by phonetic than semantic factors.
