This research questions the conventional idea that the design process requires a specific intention from the beginning, as specifying the objective in advance can cause difficulty with actually starting to design. The research aims at identifying the meaning and merits of designing with and without intention and the possibility and advantage of starting design without intention. Literature reviews and case studies were conducted for a theoretical approach, followed by two design projects applying the aesthetic forms found from designing without intent. According to the study, having an intention in the design process helps to set goals, work in a systematic way and better communication with clients. However, the intentional design process tends to be emphasized based on the idea that design is a problem solving process, and the merits of efficiency in an industrial standpoint. On the other hand, through the concept of design without intent designers can create new opportunities, make use of the design deviated from its original purpose, and apply a coincidental effect or natural phenomenon to design. Therefore, the concept of design without intent helps to derive creative results in design. The research also identifies the possibility that a designer can start the design process with no specific intent. The conceptual design process of design without intent has weaknesses in efficiency, stability, and application as a general design process, but it helps to discover new forms in the design process, which can be useful for small sized independent design projects that creativity is valued. The result of this research provides the creative possibility of the concept of design without intent, which is not considered in the conventional process of design.

본 연구는 디자인을 시작하려면 의도가 있어야 한다는 관념에 대한 문제의식을 배경으로 한다. 처음부터 목적을 분명히 해야 하는 것이 오히려 디자인을 시작하는 데 어려움을 유발할 수도 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 디자인에서 의도성과 무의도성이 가지는 의미와 역할을 고찰하고, 의도하지 않는 것으로부터 디자인을 시작하는 것의 가능성 및 이점을 작품을 통하여 확인하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 관련 문헌 및 사례를 통하여 이론적으로 고찰하고, 형태나 기능에 대한 특별한 의도 없이 창작한 조형물의 형상을 응용하여 두 가지 생활용품을 개발하고 그 과정과 결과를 평가한다. 연구결과에 따르면 디자인 과정에서 의도는 목표의 설정, 체계적인 진행, 외부와의 원활한 의사소통에 도움을 준다. 그러나 디자인에서 의도성은 디자인이 합리적인 문제해결과정이어야 한다는 인식을 바탕으로 강조되는 경향이 있고, 효율성을 중시하는 산업의 관점에서 의의가 있다. 반면에, 디자이너는 디자인 과정에서 의도하지 않거나 의도하지 않은 무언가를 추구함으로써, 새로운 디자인의 기회를 발견하거나, 의도에서 벗어난 디자인 결과를 활용하거나, 우연의 효과 또는 자연적 현상을 디자인 조형에 적용할 수 있다. 따라서 디자인 과정에서의 무의도성은 창의적 결과를 도출하는 데 도움이 된다. 또한 본 연구는 작품을 통하여 디자이너가 분명한 의도가 없어도 디자인 창작을 시작할 수 있다는 가능성을 밝혔다. 연구자가 수행한 무의도 기반 디자인 프로세스는 일반적인 디자인 프로세스로서 효율성, 안정성, 범용성이 낮다는 단점이 있지만 새로운 형태를 발견하는 데 도움이 된다는 장점이 있어 효율성보다는 창의성을 중시하는 소규모 독립 디자인 프로젝트에 도움이 될 것으로 여겨진다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 기존의 디자인 프로세스에서 다뤄지지 않았던 무의도성의 창의적 가능성을 제시했다.
