The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the physical and cognitive types of middle-aged men between the ages of 40 and 59 to find out the difference. Through this, it is intended to cover shortcomings in the development of middle-aged men''s clothing, which is expanding due to the increase in importance of appearance, and to present basic data necessary for the development of patterns and designs that can be seen as ideal body shapes. The real body shape study of middle-aged men was conducted using Size Korea’s 7th Korean human body size survey data. The perceived figure type was conducted by sampling the P sample of Q methodology. The data was analyzed using the SPSS 24.0 program for the actual figure and the QUANL program for the perceived figure. As a result of comparing real and cognitive types of middle-aged men, both real and cognitive types were analyzed as similar types. ‘Skinny and Lean Body with Bird Legs’ in actual body shape and ‘Lean Body with bird legs’ in recognitive body showed similar characteristics such as slender legs and bowed body. ‘Normal Folded Body with Thick Legs’ in actual body type and ‘Developed upper Body with thick legs’ in recognitive body were characterized by thicker legs than body. Finally, the actual figure type ‘Obese and Standard Body with Standard Legs’ and the perceived figure type ‘Abdominal protrusion and obesity Body’ were similar in that they were obese. While differences between actual and perceived body types may increase dissatisfaction with the body, this study shows that middle-aged men are accurately aware of their body types and are well accommodating physical changes. Therefore, It is thought that it will be necessary to increase satisfaction with clothes by developing patterns that can cover problems in middle-aged men''s body shapes and adding design elements to develop clothes that can be seen as ideal body shapes.
