Social media possess a dual capacity to alleviate or exacerbate loneliness in daily life. On one hand, Social media facilitate individuals in satisfying their need for self-presentation; on the other, they can engender feelings of relative deprivation through comparisons with others. This study aimed to explore how self-presentation tendencies and perceptions of relative deprivation on Social media influence the everyday loneliness experienced by individuals in their 20s, with a focus on the moderating role of usage behaviors (such as active/passive use). To achieve this objective, we conducted a survey among 600 Korean participants in their 20s. Our findings indicate that a stronger inclination toward self-presentation on Social media correlated with reduced feelings of loneliness, whereas heightened perceptions of deprivation were associated with increased loneliness. Interestingly, while actively posting or interacting with content showed no significant impact on loneliness, frequent access and passive use contributed to heightened loneliness. Notably, the manner in which individuals engaged with Social media moderated these effects, particularly evident in cases of excessive active use, where the relationship between self-presentation and loneliness became static. Additionally, passive engagement appeared to alleviate the impact of relative deprivation on loneliness across all levels of usage. These findings highlight the intricate interplay among Social media dispositions, emotions, and usage behaviors.
