This study investigated the phenomenon of selective exposure on social media and explored strategies to mitigate its effects by empirically analyzing key driving factors. Using the 2021 Social Media User Survey dataset from the Korea Press Foundation, the study performed hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS 26.0. Independent variables included trust in social media news, satisfaction with algorithmic systems, and social media news consumption frequency, with selective exposure as the dependent variable and critical media literacy as a moderating variable. The results showed that trust in social media news and news consumption frequency positively influenced selective exposure. Satisfaction with algorithmic systems also had a positive effect but was rendered insignificant when critical media literacy was considered. Furthermore, critical media literacy mitigated the relationship between selective exposure and trust in social media news. This study highlighted how personalized, algorithm-based news content worsened polarization and confirmed the importance of media literacy education as a solution
