As the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected the world, gradually comes to an end, developed countries are gearing up to formulate national response strategies to better prepare for future pandemics. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of research papers and patents on infectious marine viruses to evaluate global research trends and technological advancements. Although marine virus research began in the 1980s, it has experienced rapid growth since the onset of COVID-19 in 2019. The United States and Europe have been at the forefront of this research, while China has emerged as a rapidly advancing force in marine virus research. Moreover, the United States’ dominance in the sector is further reflected as they lead the way in patents related to infectious marine viruses. Our examination of the technological markets in key countries reveals a growth phase characterized by notable technological advancements and low barriers to market entry. The bibliometric analysis results underscore the necessity for further research to compile extensive data on infectious marine viruses, develop rapid and accurate diagnostic technologies, establish infection models, discover antiviral materials, and devise viral treatments. This study is expected to contribute to the research planning and development efforts aimed at effectively responding to future marine-related pandemics.
