The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between Chinese and Korean modern literature by examining the communication between Hu Shi and Korean literati of the same period. In the context of the evolution of modern East Asian cultural topography and the rise and fall of Chinese and Japanese power, through the investigation of the communication between Hu Shi and Korean literati, it can be found that the relationship between Chinese and Korean literature has gradually shifted from one-sided influence in ancient times to an equal dialogue relationship.
Specifically, under the influence of the sense of connection and empathetic consciousness arising from colonial and semi colonial situations, Korean literati engaged in a two-way communication and spiritual resonance with Hu Shi through various means such as correspondence, meetings and conversations, and “impressions writing” that transcended cultural barriers. At the same time, the colonial nature of Korea also determined the presence of the “Japanese factor” in the communication between Hu Shi and Korean literati. As for Hu Shi, the imperial rhetoric and historical memory of the “Korean vassal” seem to have completely given way to spiritual resonance with the weaker ethnic groups in the East. After Korean literati experienced the cultural pain of rapid colonization, they still found it difficult to resolve their deep-seated China complex. Therefore, the contemporary issue of “anti-colonialism” and common discourse ultimately contributed to the establishment of an equal dialogue relationship between Chinese and Korean literature..
