This study aims to demonstrate the positive impact of literary therapeutic writing on university students’ self-esteem. To achieve this, a literature therapy course focused on literary therapeutic writing activities was designed and conducted for 30 university students over a semester. The results of the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data obtained through pre and post self-esteem surveys, reflective journals, personal writing, and observation journals showed a significant increase in self-esteem. The process of experiencing diverse perspectives through literary works, forming personal opinions, and developing one's self-narrative through writing was identified as a key factor in the rise of self-esteem. Students exhibited characteristics of self-modesty and honest self-narratives. This is attributed to the influence of collectivist culture that emphasizes interpersonal relationships and sincere self-awareness on self-esteem. To enhance the effectiveness of literature therapy, it is suggested to consider literary literacy and motivation to lower entry barriers for the introduction of foreign literature. Based on the empirical data derived from this study, further research with a diverse range of foreign literary works and a larger sample of students is needed to explore the effects of literary therapy more comprehensively.
