In this study, we examined the relationship between countries and phonation types of Korean plosives among women who migrated to South Korea for marriage from China, Japan, and Vietnam, along with Korean native female speakers, using a variety of acoustic parameters, including voice onset time (VOT) and fundamental frequency (f0), as well as the moment parameters observing the spectral energy distribution of the release burst and vowel onset, respectively, along with the spectral tilt of the 50ms vowel onset, which may play a role in distinguishing phonation types of Korean stop sounds.
Regarding phonation types, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese speakers showed an ideal order of aspirated>lenis>tensed stops with respect to VOT. For lenis stops, VOT was observed to be {Korea, China, Vietnam}>Japan, indicating that Japanese natives articulate with a relatively short VOT, while for aspirated sounds, the results were China>{Korea, Japan, Vietnam}. The energy band difference slope (slope.ltas) of the long term average spectrum (LTAS) neatly distinguishes three types of phonation types in Korean native speakers in the order of tensed>aspirated>lenis stops. For the fundamental frequency of following vowels, a significant difference between aspirated, tensed, and lenis stops was observed (aspirated>tensed>lenis), but, unusually, no significant difference between tensed and aspirated sounds was observed for Japanese.
