The focus of this paper is to introduce the concept of morphological “Alteration” and “Alterative Affixes” in the study of the Korean language. When we look at word formation rules (WFR), “alteration” is another strategy used to form new words, especially in Romance Languages. In this study, the focus has been on the so-called “evaluative affixes”. While in the English language it might be optimal to call these affixes “evaluative”, the same term is believed to be limiting when applied to the study of the same category of affixes in the Korean language. It is believed that Korean shows a more complex system of affixes and that it would be henceforth useful to use a new term such as “Alterative Affixes”. This term reflects the main characteristics -also found in Romance Languages- of this type of affixes that contribute to the “alteration”. Following the categorization applied to the affixes in Romance Languages, four main categories of “alterative affixes” have been identified: diminutive, augmentative, ameliorative and pejorative. With the help of online corpora, the Korean affixes that showed at least one of the aforementioned characteristics were found and studied in relation to the principles of “Alteration”. Among the strategies used in this study, we focused on the individuation of repetitive patterns and the analysis of the order in which the alterative affixes stick to the root compared to other affixes. Moreover, these affixes have been studied in relation to whether they can be attached to names, adjectives, or verbs.
