This paper aims to examine the positive aspects in Jude the Obscure. Thomas Hardy’s most radical novel, Jude the Obscure serves as a vessel for Hardy’s criticism of English Victorian society. Most of this critique targets the institution of marriage, education, class divides, and hypocrisy of society. Hardy’s social criticism is much more outspoken in Jude the Obscure than in his earlier novels. Sue and Jude"s rebellious ways against the norms of society promote social issues indicative of the period. They are Hardy"s final example of how we all struggle to make some sense of the world. Hardy emphasizes the vision of life through Sue and Jude. Even if Jude the Obscure was written during English Victorian age, its characters are still valid in modern times.
