This study examined the settlement of loanwords in Korean and Japanese focusing on the share of loanwords and refined words. Calculations of the share of loanwords by year and reviews of the share ratio of loanwords for each refined word revealed that, Japanese had a high share of loanwords whereas Korean had a high share of refined words. However, regardless of whether the actual settlement level of foreign words was high or low, the number of loanwords in Japanese was higher. These results appear to be related to the period of loan language policy in both Korea and Japan and the number of refined words presented.
Additionally, the results showed that when examining the settlement, loanwords with same etymology showed different patterns in Korean and Japanese. This result is important as it demonstrates that even loanwords originating from the same original language can be established in different directions depending on the linguistic background. This result is meaningful because it suggests a new direction for studies on the settlement of loanwords.
