Purpose: This study analyzed the characteristics and effects of studies that applied nasal irrigation intervention in allergic rhinitis. Methods: The keywords ‘allergic rhinitis,’ ‘nasal irrigation,’ ‘nasal lavage,’ and ‘randomized controlled trial’ were used to search the literature published from 2019 to 2023 in PubMed or CINAHL. Results: The five studies reviewed had outcome indicators of subjective and objective measures related to allergic rhinitis. The irrigation solutions used by the intervention groups comprised buffered hypertonic saline containing budesonide, sodium hyaluronate, hypochlorous acid, 3% hypertonic saline, and surfactant. In the comparison groups, isotonic saline, buffered isotonic saline, and buffered hypertonic saline were used. The irrigation solutions in the study showed positive effects on most outcome measures post-intervention. When analyzing the irrigation solutions, those containing steroids and surfactants were more effective than the comparison group, but most solutions showed no significant differences. Conclusion: Most irrigation solutions demonstrate effectiveness, with no significantly superior solution identified. Further research is needed to identify the most effective nasal irrigation intervention method for allergic rhinitis.
