The purpose of this study was to identify what an adolescent with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury(NSSI) experienced through personal art therapy and the meaning of the experience. The participant was adolescent diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features and participated in a total of 20 art therapy sessions, once a week, 60 minutes per session. To check the status of NSSI, a post-interview was conducted one year after the art therapy completion. The data were collected from early interviews, Full Battery Assessments, recording files, artworks, evaluation records for each session, and artworks provided by the participant. The data was analyzed according to Creswell's 5 steps of Qualitative Research Data Analysis method(2017). The results of the study were as follows. First, as for the art therapy experience of the participant, nine experiences were derived: ‘to endure pain,’ ‘to recognize the painful self,’ ‘to feel pain vividly,’ ‘to face and comfort the wounds of the past,’ ‘to recognize the positive self,’ ‘to express and resolve the anger of the deep place,’ ‘to acquire flexibility and coping skill,’ ‘to find the vitality of everyday life,’ ‘to move forward to a new future.’ Second, the meaning of the art therapy experience derived four meanings: ‘expression and resolution of negative emotions,’ ‘self-understanding and self-acceptance,’ ‘understanding and accepting others,’ ‘strengthening positive self-concept.’ Based on the results of this study, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
