The concept of space holds profound significance for humans. Specifically, a house transcends the general notion of a mere location by embodying a deeper meaning. Space evokes special emotions and feelings through human experiences, enabling a unique and intimate relationship between individuals and places, thus transforming them into meaningful spaces. This perspective is intricately connected to the place-centered narrative development, a characteristic noted in the book. In this context, I will focus on the places depicted in A House for Mr. Biswas and analyze their significance. Additionally, I will draw comparisons with the Korean novel, The Children in Gwaengiburima. In certain respects, Naipaul’s work evokes comparisons to the French author Marcel Proust. However, while the narrator of A House for Mr. Biswas can be seen as Mr. Biswas—a projection of Naipaul’s father—the narrator of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time (Á la recherche du temps perdu) is an ‘I’ character, a projection of Proust himself. This may be an extended interpretation, but if we consider the notion that we often see ourselves in the image of our parents, we can infer what Naipaul ultimately aimed to convey through Mr. Biswas, who reflects his real father, in connection with In Search of Lost Time. Moreover, I will finish this analysis by exploring Edward Said’s critique of Naipaul, particularly regarding Said’s assertion that Naipaul failed to meet the fundamental obligations of a writer from the Third World.
