The recent digitalization of various creative problem-solving methodologies has led to significant changes in the design thinking process. At the forefront of this digital transformation is the advancement of generative AI, which has had a profound impact. As artificial intelligence technology progresses, generative AI is being applied to fields that require human learning ability, perception, and reasoning, as well as to the realm of creativity. Design thinking is one of the areas actively embracing this technological influence.
This study sought to identify the effects of incorporating generative AI as a tool within the design thinking process. To achieve this, a virtual space design project was conducted to identify suitable generative AI programs for each stage of design thinking and determine their distinctive features.
The integration of generative AI into the design thinking process was found to significantly impact its overall speed. It facilitated more efficient data collection and improved data accuracy. Moreover, it offered a diverse range of ideas during the implementation phase and enhanced the sophistication of prototypes.
However, limitations were observed when producing professional outcomes through design thinking. It became evident that the designer's role remains crucial for professional design, underscoring that the role of generative AI is still primarily auxiliary.
Based on these findings, the roles within the design thinking process were classified as follows: designers were categorized into roles of ‘operation,’ ‘empathy,’ and ‘selection,’ while AI was classified into roles of ‘collection,’ ‘analysis,’ and ‘generation.'
This study affirms that the importance of design thinking will be further emphasized as we approach the AI era. Current AI capabilities cannot yet fully replicate the human ability to empathize and engage with others in problem-solving processes. Empathy remains a uniquely human advantage. Consequently, design thinking is expected to coexist and develop complementarily with AI, leveraging the strengths of both human insight and artificial intelligence.
