This study examines the acoustic characteristics of elderly speakers by comparing unscripted natural speech data from speakers under 60 and over 80 years old. Using a large-scale speech dataset, we analyze vowel space differences through formant frequencies (F1, F2) in a natural speech context. This research employs frequency-based formant analysis (Park et al. 2006, Park 2017, 2024). By adapting these techniques, this study explores how aging affects the vowel articulation and formant structure of speakers. The results are visualized through contour plots and histograms that illustrate the density of formant frequencies, representing the vowel spaces of the two age groups.
The key findings of this study indicate that elderly speakers exhibit distinct phonetic characteristics in their vowel production. First, the vowel space utilized by elderly speakers is reduced, reflecting a narrower range of formant frequencies. Second, the overall density of formant distribution is lower, as evidenced by the flatter contour plots, indicating a less concentrated vowel articulation. Finally, elderly speakers tend to use low vowels and back vowels more frequently compared to middle-aged speakers, likely due to physiological changes that affect the ease of articulating vowels in those positions. These findings collectively highlight the impact of aging on vowel production and the centralization of vowel articulation in elderly speakers.
