Aging in place is one of the most popular ways. The housing requirements needs to meet the requirements of independent, safe and comfortable living for the older adults. This study aimed to identify the conceptual elements of flexible housing design that can support older adults living, focusing on helping older adults live better independently. This study utilized case study as the main research method. First, by summarizing the previous studies, the conceptual characteristics of the physical space in the design of flexible housing are obtained, five conceptual characteristics of physical space flexibility were summarized, and 13 design strategies are obtained. Then, three types of elderly living facilities are studied to analyze the practical application of flexible design strategy. The results show that modular interior layouts have the highest application frequency in three cases: movable walls, multi-functional furniture, sliding doors, and linear margins can effectively meet the changing needs of older adults. In addition, space size adjustment is also fully reflected in three cases. These results can thus provide relevant strategies for improving the quality of residential life of older adults in the future so that they can live independently and comfortably at home for longer.
