This study systematically examines the formal and thematic characteristics of Lee In-ro’s poetry by applying the ‘Six Observations’ critical standards presented in Liu Xie’sWenxindiaolong to the self-composed poems included in Lee In-ro’s Pahanjip. The primary objective of this research is to explore how Lee In-ro’s poetic creation aligns with traditional poetic criticism standards and to reveal the originality he demonstrates within that framework.
The research findings confirm that Liu Xie’s ‘Six Observations’ serve as a highly useful tool for identifying the multifaceted characteristics of Lee In-ro’s poetry. His works demonstrate remarkable achievements in all aspects of the ‘觀事義’, ‘觀位體’, ‘觀置辭’, ‘觀通變’, ‘觀奇正’ Particularly notable are Lee In-r’s creative utilization of historical allusions, the harmony between traditional forms and innovative structures, the meticulous selection of poetic diction, the balance between tradition and innovation, and his distinctive poetic perspective.
This study reaffirms that Lee In-ro’s poetry, while adhering to traditional poetic forms, effectively illustrates the characteristics of Goryeo-period poetry through its original expressions and structures. Through this research, Lee In-ro’s literary achievements are re-evaluated, contributing to a deeper understanding of the features and trends of Goryeo literature. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Liu Xie’s ‘Six Observations’ can be effectively applied to Korean literary studies, offering a new critical approach to Korean literature.
