This study examines Toegye Yi Hwang’s understanding of the mind [心] and how its structure is embodied in the language of literature, elucidating the purpose and direction of his literature. Toegye’s literary works are grounded in his comprehension of the mind’s structure. He viewed the mind as the sovereign of human beings, encompassing both substance (體) and function (用), governing principle (理) and material force (氣), and controlling nature (性) and emotions (情).
Toegye emphasized emotion (情), intention (意), and will (志) as mental functions related to literature. When the mind responds to external stimuli, emotional tendencies emerge, giving rise to intentions that advocate for specific actions. These internal volitional activities, when externally manifested, establish will. For Toegye, literature is the linguistic embodiment of these mental functions, with the literary mind oriented towards the mind’s substance.
The purpose of literature for Toegye was “JeongShim” [正心, rectifying the mind], aligning it with its structure. The key concept here was the mind’s governance (主宰), which meant controlling both the substance and function of the mind. He viewed literature as a tool for self-reflection and governance of the mind. Toegye aimed to create gentle and sincere (溫柔敦厚) poetry by correctly performing mental functions such as residing in reverence and exhaustively investigating principle (居敬窮理).
Furthermore, Toegye’s poetry aimed at “EonJi” [言志, expressing will], articulating the intention to seek the Way (求道). For him, creating poetry was a linguistic expression of the will to maintain a unified mind. His poetry and prose expressing EonJi contain a dual mindset of reclusion (隱逸) and loyalty (忠), resulting from emotions faced with nature [物] manifesting as the intention for reclusion and the will for loyalty.
