This paper focuses on the dialect word “Pai hua(zi)”, which has different meanings from modern Chinese and is ignored or simplified by many current dialect dictionaries., It uses the methods of word construction and etymological analysis to explore the evolution of the meaning of “Pai hua(zi)”, its multiple connotations and its historical context. By combing the historical corpus and documents, this paper probes into the human trafficking, trafficking and trading involved in this simple vocabulary “Pai hua(zi)”; Ordinary people's economic plight, moral decline, fear and rejection of foreign religions; As well as various problems in the social management system, so that we can understand the ups and downs of the historical generation reflected behind this dialect words in the prosperous times from another side. It also provides a new perspective for us to understand the complexity and diversity of Chinese society from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, and restores a more rich three-dimensional and wrinkled historical picture.
