This review discusses the interplay between two recent technological breakthroughs, photonics-based imaging, and organoid research, and how they have jointly transformed biomedical science by providing unprecedented opportunities to understand human development, the mechanisms of disease, and therapeutic response through the study of stem-cell-derived organoids. With the combination of recent advances in light sheet fluorescence microscopy and super-resolution microscopy techniques, it is now feasible to detect and track dynamic biological processes at high speed and resolution, and with an unlimited horizontal field of view. This facilitates a better understanding of the complex cellular and molecular interactions involved in organoid development and functioning and provides platforms for the discovery of novel drug candidates from millions of molecules for the development of personalized medicine. Further, integration with high-throughput screening and artificial intelligence can open up new avenues for the study of organoid development. As a burgeoning technology, the synergistic combination of organoid and photonics technologies is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of biomedical research, offering powerful new tools for the advancement of personalized medicine to address the ever-evolving health challenges that we currently face.
