Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra depicts the conflict between Rome and Egypt as a representation of tensions between West and East, masculine and feminine, and rigid versus fluid gender constructs. Designed to mirror a presumed Egyptian ideal of openness, Cleopatra’s political approach contrasts sharply with the Roman worldview. This study explores Cleopatra’s politics of affect through her relationships with other female figures, and the politics of belonging as elements of her political agency. It argues that Cleopatra’s political power as a monarch lies in her capacity to embrace change, functioning as an “affective potential” that transcends conventional cognitive systems. Such transversality of affect can describe Cleopatra’s adaptable nature, while her “infinite variety” highlights her body’s continuous interaction with its environment. Cleopatra challenges fixed gender categories, demonstrating that they are products of androcentric bias. She also asserts her existence by using affective power to transform her surroundings.
