This paper disscused that the phenomenon of equivalence between the negative marker ‘不’ and ‘没’ in Modern Chinese. It is an indication that ‘没’ is in the process of usage expansion or usage change. In order to examine this usage change and trend in detail, the usage patterns of negation system and negation marker in Modern Chinese dialects are examined, and semantic maps are utilized as a tool for visible and efficient comparison. Negative markers in single-negative dialects often use the m-system negatives ‘没’, ‘冇’, etc.
When the negation systems of the dialects were divided into monolingual and non-monolingual systems, it was found that the ‘m’ family, which is identical to ‘没’, is dominant in the monolingual negation system, and that various aspects of sameness appear in the non-monolingual system. We believe that these features have influenced the expansion of the usage of ‘没’ in Standard Chinese, and we will study them in more depth through diachronic considerations in future research.
