Time adverbs play a crucial role in determining the aspectual meanings of predicates. In English, two different types of time adverbs, durative adverbs and time-span adverbs, show clear contrast: The former is compatible with atelic predicates whereas the latter cooccurs only with telic predicates. Hence, they basically show a complementary distribution. Meanwhile, Korean durative adverbials led by -tongan can occur with telic predicates as well as ateilc predicates, so telicity cannot account for their distribution. We propose that -tongan adverbials are specified simply as [+durative], and the value of [telic] or [transitional] is irrelevant for them. Such a proposal explains why they naturally go together with Accomplishments/ Activities but not with Achievements; only the former group is [+durative]. Meanwhile, Korean time-span adverbs, led by -maney, are specified simply as [+transitional], and hence they accompany Accomplishments, Achievements, and Inchoatives. Then it follows that in Korean, Accomplishments are compatible with both -maney and -tongan adverbials. Another time adverbial -ccay is more like English for-adverbials in that it is a strict durative adverbial, specified as [+durative], [-transitional].
