Resources, relationship, and natural condition expressed as commons have been the foundation for supporting life for a long time in human history. This formed civilization by opposing or complementing ‘private property or market-oriented social relations based on it.’ Accordingly, a considerable amount of research on commons has been accumulated at home and abroad and is being put into practice as concrete experiments or alternative ways of life. I also introduced Mencius's idea of ‘sharing-with-the-people’ and the meaning of commons in the development of civilization history.
In this study, life and commons during the Joseon Dynasty were explored. As materials, Saemirok(瑣尾錄), Oh Hui-mun (吳希文, 1539-1613)'s refugee diary in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, were selected. Saemirok has the advantage of being able to observe both everyday life and refuge life. In addition, with regard to Saemirok, researches have been accumulated ranging from the food to agricultural management through Dunjeon(屯田) and tenant farming and these are providing a foundation for developing critical awareness of this paper.
First, I looked into the plight of refugee Oh Hee-moon, including housing, food, clothing, and cultural activities. Second, I looked into the living resources obtained from the ‘commons’, that is, the mountain-forest-river-swamp(山林川澤), animal proteins such as pheasants and fish, and plants such as herbs. In addition, Oh Hee-moon survived through help from relatives and nearby town leaders, state granary system, self-employed farming, and some commercial activities and bartering. Third, I presented theoretically the impact of ‘commons’ which is public land, on survival and livelihood, its connection with changes in the tax system imposed by the state, and interpretations of political ideas such as ‘sharing-with-the-people’
