Following the influence of the Korean Wave, the number of Korean language learners is increasing worldwide. However, design research that examines the experiences of foreigners learning Korean, especially at the beginner proficiency level is limited. The researchers seek to understand the impact of Hangul typefaces used in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) and Korean language textbooks on the reading experience of these learners. First, through a literature review, the effects of font selection, familiarity, and impression on the readers were examined. Additionally, an analysis of typefaces used in language proficiency tests worldwide showed that while TOPIK’s default typefaces is Batangche (a Korean serif typeface), most other countries used sans-serif typefaces. An analysis of Korean language learning print and digital media showed increasing use of sans-serif typefaces in these resources. Four hypotheses were established to evaluate how the findings from the literature review and case analysis apply to both beginner and advanced Korean language learners. This investigation focused on the impact of familiarity with, and impressions of Hangul typefaces used in the TOPIK exam and Korean textbooks on readability and text preference. This was achieved through reading speed tests and in-depth interviews focused on Batangche and Dotumche, conducted with foreign learners of the Korean language. The results revealed that beginners’ text preferences were more influenced by typeface impression, while the readability and text preferences of advanced learners were greatly influenced by typeface familiarity. The use of highly legible typefaces for beginner learners’ materials, which largely feature non-continuous texts and more readable typefaces in advanced learners’ materials, would be more appropriate. Beginner learners’ experience with print and digital Korean learning platforms was also observed to significantly impact their reading experience. The outcomes of this research suggest the need to consider the Korean proficiency level of learners when choosing typefaces for TOPIK and Korean textbooks. The insights gained from this research are expected to be useful to foreign Korean Language learners and the publishers of TOPIK exam and Korean language textbooks.
