This essay explores how Charlotte Turner Smith, a poet and novelist of the Romantic period, employs the discourse of romance as a vehicle for nuanced political expression in what is arguably her finest novel, The Old Manor House. Written during a time when the French Revolution had descended into escalating violence, the novel is considered to mark a retreat from the overt revolutionary enthusiasm evident in her earlier work, Desmond. However, rather than seeking to determine a definitive shift in Smith’s political stance, I argue that The Old Manor House demands an appreciation of the complexity she achieves through the genre and discourse of romance. Romance played a central role in the pamphlet wars between Edmund Burke and the English Jacobins, serving as a rhetorical tool for both revolutionaries and reactionaries. Smith capitalizes on this ambivalence, satirizing the romance tradition and structuring her novel around the conflict between two opposing forms of romance: chivalric romance, which evokes the past, and revolutionary romance, which envisions the future. The novel’s conclusion emerges from the dialectics of romance, reflecting Smith’s ruminations on the nature of political change, while the author exhibits discontent with either version of romance. Yet, the seemingly happy ending rests on a flimsy and ephemeral synthesis, one that foresees the inevitable upheaval of unstable desire set in motion by romance.
