This study analyzed research and development (R&D) trends in artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of digital innovation technologies and explored the developmental direction of the AI industry in Gwangju. Using technology mining, the relative status and performance of national R&D were compared regionally, and social issues pertaining to the AI industry in Gwangju were examined through a news issue scanning analysis. The results indicate that Gwangju demonstrates competitive AI research productivity in academic papers and technology commercialization performance through industry-academic-research cooperation but lower levels of patent productivity. Gwangju’s AI research clusters focus on applied research areas such as healthcare, smart manufacturing, autonomous driving, and service platforms, with increasing applications in regionally representative industries of automobiles, energy, and semiconductors. In addition, the news issue scanning analysis revealed local interest and demand for developments in the semiconductor industry, specialized industrial complexes, data centers, job policies, and new convergence contents. To establish Gwangju as an AI hub, it is necessary to develop a convergence research ecosystem, identify specialized industrial applications, enhance business capabilities, and implement an AI ethics framework. These findings can be used as basic data for establishing strategies to activate the AI industry ecosystem in Gwangju.
