This paper aims to look deeply into how the corpus-based properties of English Negative Inversion (ENI) are couched in the framework of Sign-Based Construction Grammar. As a starting point, with the help of a total of 696 data from ICE-GB and BNC, we classified the negators of ENI into sentential, compatible, and local ones. Interestingly enough, an overwhelming majority of sentential negators are adverbial adjuncts, not complements. Also of interest is that the criterion for classifying sentential negators should be based solely on grounds of semantic complexity of the fronted constituents involved, not syntactic structures. Not only does the NEG feature of ENI exhibit a nonlocal clause-bounded property without violating the HFP, but the NEG value of the sentential negator can also be either negative [-] or positive [+]. Reflecting these properties, ENI construction (i.e., ni-cx) inherits multiple constraints from hd-mod-cx and core-cl.
