Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are introduced into the marine environment from a variety of sources such as oil spills. PAHs are easily absorbed by living beings due to the high octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow) that favors the rapid transfer from the aqueous phase to lipophilic compartments. PAHs are characterized as priority pollutants since some of them are known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and teratogens. Marine organisms are likely to have higher exposure to possibly a higher toxic contribution from PAHs.
Samples for estimating concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocargons(PAHs) were collected at the tidal flat sediments in Gochang, at twenty sampling stations for the surface sediment and biota, three times in the spring, summer and fall in 2014. This study was performed to evaluate the distributions of seasonal and spatial concentrations of PAHs in the tidal flat sediments. The source origin of PAHs were carried out. The total average concentration of PAHs in the tidal flat sediment was 4.44 ng/kg. (1-21 ng/g dw) which as well as other domestic research areas, showed a very low concentration level in the world. The difference was not observed according to the site and season. distribution of the concentrations did not appear in the tidal flat organisms, concentration changes according to the season has been observed. In particular been used for biota of irradiation showed the highest concentration in february. The closer to the summer the PAH emission was assumed by scattering.
